Meet Merry Smith!

By: Carrdi Grant

This month’s business member highlight is Merry Smith with Merry’s Mud Pottery House. Merry is originally from Vicksburg, Mississippi, but has a long-time history here in the Great State and a passion for handmade pottery.

Smith gravitated to pottery her whole life, but around 2004 with the encouragement of her loving husband, she started her hands-on experience with creating pottery. “He believed in me,” said Smith when mentioning her husband surprising her with pottery classes after seeing her love for the craft. Today, teapots are one of her favorite things to sculpt, as well as mugs because of their variety – and variety is exactly what you’ll find in the shop.

When you visit Merry’s Mud Pottery House you’ll find a wide selection of plates, mugs, teapots and more. They’re all in varying sizes and colors. The sets make perfect gifts or new meaningful pieces to keep in your family for years. Beyond purchasing pottery, the shop itself is incredibly inviting and feels like a warm wonderful place to rest and relax,

have coffee and pastries with a friend, or enjoy the yard in the fall. It is Merry’s hope that visitors come and stay a while.

Smith also teaches pottery classes in 6-week long classes that take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Smith joined the Friends of the Round Rock Public Library as a business member after meeting Cathy Kincaid. “As a member, I’m helping my community and helping the little ones in my community,” said Smith, “It’s an opportunity to do good.” When speaking of public libraries, Smith had nothing but positive things to say. “It saves you,” said Smith recalling her own youth, “When you grow up in more rural areas, libraries open you up to other worlds you didn’t know were there. It’s a bit of escapism.”
